WE BREATHED NEW LIFE into this beautiful and massive Glencoe home, both through a careful restoration and a major subterranean expansion.

Step one was suspending the 8,000-square-foot foundation on structural cribbing. Step two was completely removing the 7-foot basement and excavating for a much roomier 10-foot basement. Step three? Fully finishing the basement with a new wine cellar.

The restoration included a new living room, dining room, kitchen, mudroom, family room, loggia, 5 bedrooms, and 5 baths.
