The homeowners have a singular vision: to build the first certified LEED-H Platinum house in Wilmette, Illinois. (The home will soon undergo a comprehensive energy audit as part of its certification.)

Greener Building

Green, LEED-worthy construction features included:

  • Solar panels installed on roof for producing some of electrical needs as well as all the hot water for the house
  • Geo-thermal heating and cooling
  • Insulation that far exceeds the code minimum
  • An energy recovery ventilation unit (ERV) for better indoor air quality
  • Hardwood flooring throughout the house made from old barn beams: new trees were not used, and the hardwood surfaces improve air quality compared to carpeting
